Sealy football picked to finish fifth in district by Texas Football Magazine

The Sealy Tiger football season opener against Wharton on the road on Sept. 1 is fast approaching.

Recently, the Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine hit newsstands and the Tigers are not expected to challenge for the District 12-4A Division I title as the magazine predicts a fifth place finish for Sealy.

The Tigers finished in a three way tie for the fourth playoff spot last season, but missed out on the post season due to a tie breaker.

Stafford is picked to win the district, followed by El Campo, Bay City and West Columbia. Needville is picked sixth and Brazosport seventh.

Running back Nery Enriquez from El Campo was named the Preseason Offensive Most Valuable Player and linebacker Noah Nelson from Stafford was named Preseason Defensive MVP.

The Tigers hope to prove the prediction wrong this season under new head coach Shane Mobley. Texas Football Magazine highlighted wide receiver Justin Eckhardt and starting quarterback Garrett Zaskoda as keys to the Tigers success this season.

Sealy returns just three starters on offense and four on defense, but there are 22 returning players on the roster that should provide stability.

The program has high hopes under its new head coach, which led Sweetwater to the Class 4A Division II championship game last season.

Fans will get their first chance to see the Tigers when they scrimmage Kincaid on Aug. 18 at home followed by a scrimmage against Brookshire Royal on Aug. 24 on the road.

Sealy opens the season in Wharton, which lost to the Tigers in the season opener last season 28-7. The Tigers will host St. Pius X on Sept. 8 after beating the Tigers last year in Houston 48-26.

Sealy's homecoming game will be held Sept. 15 against Columbus, which edged the Tigers 31-27 last season in Columbus, and the last non-district game of the season is in Bellville on Sept. 22. Bellville won 35-7 in 2016 at TJ Mills Stadium.

The Tigers begin District 12-4A competition on Sept. 29 in Needville after beating the Bluejays 35-28 last season at home. The next week, Sealy hosts Brazosport on Oct. 6 followed by a bye week. The Tigers won 32-29 in a thrilling come from behind effort in double overtime last season in Freeport.

Sealy travels to El Campo on Oct. 20 after losing 31-7 to the Ricebirds in 2016 at home. The Tigers host Stafford on Oct. 27. Stafford beat Sealy 44-7 last season in Stafford.

The last road game of the regular season is against Bay City on Nov. 3. Sealy's playoff hopes took a hit last season in a 30-20 loss at home to Bay City. The Tigers wrap up the regular season on Nov. 10 at home against West Columbia, which beat Sealy 31-13 on the road in 2016 to wrap up a playoff spot for the Roughnecks.
