Ruth Marilyn Elshick, 88, of San Felipe received her reward in Heaven when she went to meet the Lord Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017. Surrounded by her beloved daughter, Judy Gauss, and grandchildren, her spirit was released to Heaven after an awe-inspiring battle with cancer. Ruth Elshick was born on Feb. 17, 1928, in Toledo, Ohio, to parents, Frances and Theresa Drake. As a child, she loved the outdoors, sports, ice skating, fishing, and was involved in various activities in high school.
When WWII was upon our country, Ruth worked in the factory alongside her fellow ladies manufacturing support equipment for the war. During this time, she had fond memories of her and the ladies working and fellowshipping as they supported our military and their community. It was during this time, she, via letters, met her soul mate, Daniel Elshick. Daniel was in the Marines in the Japanese Islands, when during battle, Ruth's brother, Frank Drake, said, "Do you want to see a picture of a pretty girl?" It was Ruth. Daniel asked her brother permission to write a letter. He granted it and it was a love story for the ages.
Daniel Elshick returned after the war and went from San Felipe, Texas, to Toledo, Ohio, to claim his love. They were married for 52 years when Daniel went to meet the Lord in 2000. Ruth Elshick was a homemaker all her life, the best years of her life were rearing her children Jesse and Judy. With a growing family, she then became the bright light and guider for grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
Ruth Elshick was a faithful servant of God, her ministry was prayer. She had a prayer list that she prayed down every day and then followed up with phone calls to those on the list in the community. She loved working in her yard, made time for shopping trips, and never missed a Houston Astro's game via radio or television. She loved to play her music loud and keep her home immaculate and was a welcoming place for all. That same ethic carried over to her church. She and Daniel, as that wonderful couple they were, impacted so many lives with their faith in God and their service. They were active members of Sealy Assembly where they were huge supporters for the ministry. Ruth and Daniel worked in the nursery ministry, choir, kitchen duty, and Primetimers. Her love was felt by every person she touched and came in contact with. When Saturday night rolled around, she was laying out clothes and making sure her hair would be at its best to go and worship God and fellowship on Sunday. She was an active member of Shepherd's Way Church. She always said, "It was like going to her own wedding". Ruth will be missed but remembered by that beautiful smile and unshaken faith in Christ Jesus.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, her husband Daniel Elshick, her son Jesse Elshick, and great grandson Kyle Gauss.
