Bellville junior tailback Richard Reese had a record-breaking night against Cameron Yoe last Friday as his 424 all-purpose yards and seven touchdowns carried the Brahmas past the Yeoman 54-41 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Reese became the single-game rushing and scoring leader in Bellville football history, breaking a record that had stood for over eight decades. His 345 rushing yards on 27 carries bested Willie Zapalac’s 35-carry, 323-yard performance in 1938, according to BellvilleSports.com. Reese’s 42 points scored (six rushes and a 40-yard reception) also topped a record set by Mac Briscoe in 2016.
Fellow junior running back Robert Briggs added 113 all-purpose yards and the other rushing touchdown while the defense supplied the final stops to secure the win.
Three Bellville defenders collected double-digit tackles; Garrett Babylon led the group with 15, sophomore Tyler Fishbeck recorded 13 and senior Logan Cruz finished with 11. Lane Hayslip and Cole Powell tackled seven each, Rex Aschenbeck had six tackles while Lane Lischka and Salvador Reyes chipped in five each.
Bellville’s performance to start the year landed them the No. 9 spot in the “Dave Campbell’s” state rankings entering week three, where the Brahmas will host an 0-2 Stafford team.
