Phyllis Chew, 82, passed away unexpectedly in her home on May 2, 2017, in Richmond. She was one of two children born to Eddie and Mabel Lawson on July 21, 1934, in Gladewater.
Phyllis is survived by her sister, Peggy Williams of Waco; children Linda Friedrich (Tom) of New Braunfels, Sharon Linton (John) of Richmond, Clay Chew (Sue) of Sugar Land and Michael Chew of Dallas; grandchildren Lisa Friedrich of Austin, Chris Friedrich of Austin and Phillip Schneider of Webster; as well as many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her beloved parents, father Eddie in 1970 and mother Mabel in 2014.
Growing up, her father’s job took the family to many cities across the South until they settled in Sealy in 1949. It was there that she met Paul Chew and they were married June 20, 1951. After Paul’s service in the U.S. Army, they settled back in Sealy on the family ranch where many fond memories were made.
Phyllis was dedicated to her children and some of her happiest times were spent during family trips and holidays. In her later years, she lived near family: Peggy and Mabel in Waco, Michael in the DFW area, Linda in Lake Jackson and Friendswood, and most recently, in Richmond near Sharon and Clay.
Phyllis was a sports enthusiast, loving the Texas A&M Aggies, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Houston Astros and Houston Rockets. Other favorite activities were gardening, reading, crossword puzzles and listening to her favorite music, everything from Elvis to Pavarotti.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home, 12555 S. Kirkwood Road, Stafford, Texas 77477.
