VFD celebration

New Ulm Volunteer Fire Department is holding its 67th annual celebration Sunday, Sept. 17, at New Ulm Fireman’s Park. Serving of barbecue beef, mutton and pork begins at 11 a.m. Proceeds go toward firefighting equipment and a new fire station. Special attractions include a raffle drawing, gun raffle, moon walk, games, bake sale, cake walk and prizes.

Public Dance

A public dance at Sealy American Legion Hall sponsored by the Texas Heritage Music & Dance Club will be Sunday, Sept. 17. Charles & The Fabulous Four will be providing music from 2 to 5:30 p.m.  There will be door prizes, silent auction, and a 50-50 pot.

Church Bazaar

Immaculate Conception Church Bazaar will be Sunday, Sept. 24, at the Sealy KC Hall. Serving for the barbecue dinner begins at 10:30 a.m. Mexican food is also available. There will be live and silent auctions, many booths and stands and live music by Kovanda's Czech Band. 

Kulhanek Family Reunion

The Kulhanek Family Reunion for the descendants of Antonin and Celestine Kulhanek will be Sept. 25, at St. John’s Catholic Church Dining Hall in Fayetteville. A mass dedicated to the family begins at 10 a.m. followed by the reunion.

Food Bank Produce Truck

The Houston Food Bank Produce Truck will be in Sealy at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1390 Highway 90, Tuesday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to noon. The produce is free to anyone living in Austin County. There also will be someone from the Houston Food Bank to assist with anyone who needs help applying for or renewing SNAP (food stamps) or children’s Medicaid/CHIP.


Holy Cross Parish Bazaar

Riverside Hall will be the site of the Holy Cross Parish Bazaar, Oct. 8. Lunch consisting of barbecue beef, chicken and sausage with “homemade” dressing and all the trimmings will be served at 11 a.m. Hamburgers will be available at 3 p.m. Pastries, refreshments and country store items will be available for purchase during the day. An auction is planned for 12:30 p.m.

State Historic Site

San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site shares the stories of Stephen F. Austin and his colonists who came to Mexican Texas in the 1820s and 1830s. The historic site is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers frequent special-content programming on weekends. Construction on a new museum is ongoing (anticipated opening is spring 2018). Updated property tax information available

The Austin County Appraisal District has updated property tax information available to assist taxpayers. Information for select groups, such as disabled veterans and persons who are who are age 65 or older. For more information about these programs, contact the Austin County Appraisal District at 906 E.
