Food Bank Produce Truck

The Houston Food Bank Produce Truck will be in Sealy at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1390 Highway 90W, Tuesday, July 19, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The produce is free to anyone living in Austin County. There will also be someone from the Houston Food Bank to assist anyone that needs help with applying or renewing SNAP (food stamps) or children’s Medicaid/CHIP.

Blood drive in Cat Spring

Thursday, July 21st from 4-8pm you can save 3 lives by donating blood at the semi-annual Blood Drive taking place in the fellowship hall of St. John Lutheran Church in Cat Spring. Walk-ins are welcome! 1,000 donations each day are needed to ensure an adequate blood supply for patients in the Texas Gulf Coast region. Please take this opportunity to donate!

Ackley Golf Event Rescheduled for July 22 

The C. Gaylen Ackley Memorial Golf Classic XVI will be held on Friday, July 22 at Stephen F. Austin Golf Course, according to event planners. The event was originally scheduled for Friday, May 20 but predicted heavy rainfall caused the event to be postponed. Tagged the “Thanks a Million” event, the 2016 golf event will top the one-million-dollar mark for proceeds raised. 

Free Parkinson’s disease, tremor seminar set

Join Dr. Toby Yaltho, fellowship-trained movement disorder neurologist, and Dr. Richard Simpson, a neurosurgeon at Houston Methodist Neurological Institute, on Thursday, July 28 at 6 p.m. for a free patient education seminar at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Brazos Pavilion Conference Center. They will discuss Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy for Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor including the benefits and risks of surgery and appropriate patient selection. New Beginnings Support Group

New Beginnings Support Group is a new group which will cover topics such as domestic abuse, depression, anxiety, divorce and grief. Garden Club offers scholarship 

The Garden Club of Sealy is accepting applications for another scholarship for which Sealy area students, taking or planning to take a curriculum in agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, landscape design or similar agriculture-related program in the fall of 2016, may apply. Interested students can request additional information and/or a copy of the application by emailing gardenclubofsealy@aol.com or by calling Dusty Kelly at 713-899-6117. The application is also posted on the Sealy High School website. Deadline for submission is July 15, 2016

Updated property tax information available 

The Austin County Appraisal District has updated property tax information available to assist taxpayers. This property tax information is current and covers a wide range of topics, such as taxpayer remedies, exemptions and appraisals, and has information for select groups, such as disabled veterans and persons who are who are age 65 or older.

4-H archery project 

The Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service in Austin County will be starting a 4-H archery project open to any child from grades 3-12. The agency is looking for individuals who would be willing to donate new/used Archery equipment, Recurve Bows, Arrows, Targets and Protective Gear. Summer library program 

Knox Memorial Library is offering a summer library program to children to encourage them to read for pleasure during the summer and to retain their reading skills. This year’s theme is On Your Mark, Get Set, Read. To donate, call the library at 979-478-6813.
