After not fielding a team for two years due to lack of participation, the Faith Academy Lady Knights’ basketball season came to an end in the bi-district round of the playoffs this year, 50-25 against Kingwood Covenant at Rosehill Christian on Feb. 14.
In the home stretch of the regular season, Faith Academy made a push and secured the second seed in District 9-1A of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools and drew a matchup with the Kingwood Knights, winners of District 10 with a 9-1 record.
Faith fell behind in the first half only for Kingwood to score 20 points in the third quarter to take advantage of the postseason meeting and clinch a trip to the area round. The Kingwood Knights went on to take down Cornerstone Christian by a 33-22 score before falling to Legacy Christian Academy, 69-26, in the regional round.
To close the season for the Faith Academy Lady Knights, Gabby Yates led the team with seven points and had Addie Kuespert and Haley Guzman not far behind with five points apiece. Josie Bretado scored four and Genesis Mignery and Chesney Johnston both added a pair of points.
“We had a very inspirational 2019-20 season,” said head coach Terri Tomlinson. “After not having a varsity team for two years and not one of the players having played at the high school level, this very young team of one senior, four sophomores, and five freshmen stood their ground and competed against many higher-level division schools.”
That elevation in play, however, didn’t hinder the progression the team made over the season.
“They focused on fundamentals and teamwork and committed to accepting each challenge that was placed before them,” Tomlinson said. “I could not have asked for a more dedicated group of young ladies. They were not afraid to ask questions and gain more knowledge about the game.
“The Lady Knights worked hard in making adjustments as the season went on,” she continued. “When it came down to making the playoffs, these ladies stepped up their game and finished second in district to advance to the next round. The Faith Academy Lady Knights are looking to be strong and competitive again next year.”
