On Thursday, Jan. 16, the Faith Academy Lady Knights welcomed the Robert Beren Academy Stars for the first district meeting between the two schools.
The Stars went up 11-6 after the first quarter but the Lady Knights chipped away at the deficit and trailed only 16-13 at halftime. Faith Academy continued to fight its way back and tied the game in the third quarter, 21-21.
As time was running down in the fourth quarter, the Lady Knights pulled to within a point of Beren Academy and took a lead with less than a minute to play. With good defense, they were able to deny the Stars and walked away with a 27-26 win.
Addie Kuespert led the Faith Academy scorers with 13 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Joselyn Bretado and Chesney Johnston contributed four points each and Genesis Mignery, Rachel Kuespert, and Gabby Yates added two points each.
The Lady Knights traveled to Robert Beren Academy earlier this week for the teams’ second meeting with the schedule winding down.
On the boys’ side of things, the Faith Academy came up on the short end of both of its contests last week but received a couple of sizeable contributions.
In the first action of the week, the Knights hosted Cypress Covenant Academy and fell by a 63-21 score although Kaleb Shepherd was responsible for a third of the hosts’ points. Nathan Figueroa and Pierce Newcomb each added three points.
To close the week, Southwest Christian Academy came to Faith Academy to square off in another district tilt where the Knights came on strong at the end.
The home team outscored the visitors 37-30 in the second half but an early lead sealed the deal for the Saints, who took home the win by a 60-48 margin.
Once again, Shepherd led the Faith Academy scorers with 14 points and was joined by a few teammates in double digits. Figueroa poured in 12 points, Nathan Taake scored 11 points and Pierce Newcomb added 10 points for the Knights who dropped to 0-8 on the season and 0-4 in district play.
The Faith Academy boys had just one game on this week’s schedule, a Monday evening trip to Robert Beren Academy with a pair of home contests awaiting next week’s play.
