Eighth A, seventh B grab tournament championships

Last weekend saw championships come back to town thanks to a pair of teams, one girl and one boy team.

The Lady Tigers travelled to the Needville Tournament where the seventh grade A team split two games to secure a third-place finish.

The seventh grade B team started things with a win over El Campo and then Needville in the finals.

Camarie Santos was the tournament Most Valuable Player for Sealy, leading the scoring category against El Campo while being the top rebounder and defensive specialist in both games.

Karizma Walker was the lead scorer in the Needville game, scoring six points in the fourth quarter.

On the other side of things, the eighth grade A squad faced plenty of adversity.

They suffered their first defeat of the season to the hands of El Campo, 41-39. However, the teams met back up again Saturday afternoon and it was the Tigers who emerged victorious, in triple overtime no less.

The 37-36 final score sent them to the championship against a Wharton team who also was no match for Sealy. The Tigers won by a 41-22 margin to claim the tournament championship.

Standouts were Mason Klotz and Ryder Ramirez who both averaged 11 points per game to push the team’s record to 8-1.

The B team from eighth grade similarly fell to the El Campo squad, this one by a 32-28 final score. However, just like their A-team counterparts, the Tigers earned revenge by way of a 21-19 decision Saturday.

Amador Lopez prohibited the top-scoring Ricebird from doing what he does best, and Colby Eschenburg supplied big shots in the final frame to each help their team to victory.

That led to a championship-matchup with Wharton also, but those Tigers secured a 26-19 win to claim the championship. This time around, Sealy’s revenge will have to wait until later this month.

The seventh grade A team lost to El Campo, 43-31, on Thursday night and 35-16 on Saturday morning. The Tigers would rebound by beating Needville, 27-23.

Maurice Wigfall hit a big three in the final moments to seal the victory and a third-place finish for the Tigers. Other tournament standouts were Jay Aguado, Reid Miller, and Talon Joiner. A team is now 6-3 on the season.

Seventh grade’s B team lost to El Campo, 23-21, Thursday night and 22-18 Saturday morning. The B team lost another hard-fought game to Wharton, 21-19. B team is now 3-6 on the season.
