Graciela Mendes, 87, passed away March 12, 2017 in Houston, Texas. She was born March 28, 1929, in Cuba, where she attended high school and was adopted by Jose Ramon Diaz and Hayde Diaz. She moved to Spain, then New York, where she became a proud U.S. citizen in 1970. Grace married in 1964 and is survived by her husband of 53 years, Florentino Mendes, and their sons Horacio Paul Mendes and wife Nina; her grandchildren Jason, Brittany, Nicole; great grandchildren Grayson and Harper, Ricardo Mendes and wife Lisa; granddaughter Zoe; nephews Kenny and Brandon Guzman. Grace worked all her life and retired from Reliability Electronics with 20 years of service. She battled cancer on and off for 39 years while at the same time always living her life to the fullest. Grace was a beautifully gifted folk artist, seamstress (who according to her grandchildren could sew or fix anything), had a green thumb and was a delicious cook. By her name sake, Grace was always gracious, grateful, and giving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend.
Visitation with the family was held Monday, March 20, 2017 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Frydek. Funeral Mass began at 1 p.m. and burial followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
