Austin County Judge Tim Lapham proclaimed German American Month in Austin County at the Oct. 14 meeting of Commissioners Court. The proclamation was signed at the County Courthouse in Bellville in the presence of members of the Bluebonnet Chapter of the Texas German Society.
Americans of German descent constitute the largest ethnic group in the United States with more than 58 million Americans proudly proclaiming their German heritage. Austin County and the surrounding areas contain a large number of inhabitants with German backgrounds.
The Bluebonnet Chapter of Texas German Society strives to preserve and promote the German language, culture and traditions. This group meets bi-monthly at the Hill Center in Sealy. Anyone, including non-German speaking individuals, is encouraged to join. They may contact chapter president Herbert Schumann at 979-865-3804.
