The Friends of the San Felipe de Austin SHS are excited to invite area residents and history lovers to attend a project update meeting on the new museum facility being constructed in San Felipe by the Texas Historical Commission (THC). The meeting is open to anyone interested in learning more about the project including future programs and the construction schedule.

During the meeting, attendees will receive information about the role of the Friends of San Felipe de Austin SHS, hear a project status update from THC staff, and learn about the ongoing capital campaign to support the project from Friends of the THC Executive Director Anjali Zutshi. In addition, information stations will be available covering topics like future volunteer opportunities, field trip planning (for educators), becoming a Friends member, and spring programs and activities planned for the site. In addition, attendees will be able to take a brief tour of the under-construction museum building.

WHAT: Citizens’ Rally in Support of San Felipe de Austin Museum Project

WHEN: Monday, March 27, 6 p.m. (arrival) – 6:30-7:45 p.m. Program

WHERE: San Felipe Museum Construction Site, located north of 2nd Street across from the United Methodist Church in San Felipe; attendees will park on the grounds of the church (area will be marked) and walk to the construction site

WHO: Any area resident interested in regional/state history, in the museum project specifically or in supporting local development should make plans to attend

“This is a wonderful opportunity for area residents to get an early look at the new museum project, opening in 2018. This project will bring tourists, families and history-lovers to Austin County and will be a dynamic offering that uses our unique past to connect visitors to a very real, and forgotten, place – the site where Stephen F. Austin managed his Colony before the Texas Revolution," said Carolyn Bilski, President of the Friends of the San Felipe de Austin SHS.

Those interested in attending can call 979-885-2181 for more information. They can also follow the state historic site on Facebook for updates and additional information.

The San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site, a Texas Historical Commission-managed property, is open every day (excepting major holidays) from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. To plan a visit or learn more about the site, go to www.visitsanfelipedeaustin.com.
