Four-car pileup leads to child smuggling arrest

A four-vehicle pileup at approximately 8:35 a.m. Saturday led to the arrest of Tidurcio Martin Rivera, 30, a suspect charged with smuggling of a child, who was captured while attempting to flee the scene of the accident.

"The suspect that was driving that vehicle got out of that car and tried to flee the scene. It was later determined that there was a child inside that vehicle," said Det. Jason Manies, spokesman for the Sealy Police Department.

Adriana, 4, was being transported from San Antonio to the Houston area by the suspect.

Rivera was charged with smuggling of persons, accident involving personal injury and reckless driving. Adriana sustained lacerations to her arm and a skull fracture.

Martin initially told officers he was transporting his girlfriend's child to her in Houston but later recanted and said he was paid $200 for transportation to an unknown relative.

"He was supposed to meet someone at a Fiesta off IH-45 in the Spring/Aldine area," Manies said. "The worst part is we don't know who the child's parents are. And, from what we gather, we think that the mother may still be in Mexico and she hasn't made her way over here yet."

Manies said the child disclosed to another victim on the scene that her mother is still in Mexico and will pick her up later. But picking her up later is relative to a child, Manies said.

The suspect had no cellular device, paperwork or any means of communicating with the party he would meet once he arrived at his destination other than possibly by vehicle identifiers.

"We've never had this happen before, that I'm aware of, in this municipality. I'm sure it's happened elsewhere but we've never had this issue before and it's pretty shocking to me," Manies said.
