The Faith Academy Bellville Lady Knights Volleyball team took second place in first round pool play Friday at its Annual Summer Blowout Tournament. The 5-3 total sets finish earned the team a spot in Saturday’s gold bracket where the Lady Knights ran into more stiff competition.
“Our girls showed tremendous perseverance and grit throughout the tournament against some strong competition,” first-year head coach Joshua McLain said. “While we lost steam and couldn’t finish some of the matches I am proud of the overall effort the girls delivered this weekend.”
In Friday pool play, Faith Academy split sets with Faith West Academy Katy, 14-15 FA, 15-8 FW; Fayetteville High School, 15-14 FA, 14-15 Fayetteville; and Alpha Omega Academy, 8-15 FA, 15-10 AOA. The Lady Knights defeated San Marcos Hill Country, 15-12 and 15-5.
In Saturday’s Gold Bracket play the team ran up against TAAPS 6A Katy St. John’s School. The Lady Knights took leads in the first set before falling, 25-23. The Lady Knights couldn’t overcome St. John’s in the second set, 25-4.
“We did what we needed to do to win the first set against a bigger, more explosive team but we started to make some mistakes that eventually got us in the end,” McLain said. “It’s early. There’s nothing we can’t get back in the gym and fix, moving forward.”
Faith Academy faced Shiner St. Paul in the tournament finale. After working to gut out a set one win, 25-18, against another explosive team, the Lady Knights ran into trouble in sets two and three to drop the match. Shiner went on to defeat Faith West in the consolation bracket. In the championship game, Christian Homeschool Sports Ministries defeated Huntsville Alpha Omega 25-22, 25-21, to win this years’ Summer Blowout.
“It’s encouraging to see that this team was in every match this weekend regardless of who was on the other side of the net. We just have to commit as a team to getting better every day.”
The Lady Knights would like to thank the following teams who participated and helped to make the Summer Blowout another success: Fayetteville HS, San Marcos Hill Country, Huntsville Alpha Omega, Faith West Academy, Christian Homeschool Sports Ministries, Logos Prep, St. John’s XXIII, Conroe Covenant Christian, Aggieland, Providence Classical and Shiner St. Paul.
