Brewer honored by Sen. Kolkhorst

Brahmanettes sit in second heading into home stretch

For her contributions to Bellville ISD’s volleyball program, Brahmanette head coach Susan Brewer had a special guest on hand for last Friday’s contest with the Giddings Buffaloes.

State Sen. Lois Kolkhorst presented Brewer with a Senate Bill of Recognition for her recent induction into the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) Hall of Fame which was just one part of what has been a successful career where her teams have won more than 1,000 matches.

That district tilt with the visiting Buffaloes served as another victory for the red and white, which pushed its record within District 26-4A play to 6-1 behind only the Caldwell Hornets who sit at 7-0 and No. 2 in the TGCA state poll entering play this week.

The La Grange Leopards hold third place at 3-4 and are followed by Giddings at 2-5 as the top four teams in the district. The Smithville Tigers sit just outside the playoff picture with their 2-5 record while the Navasota Rattlers own a 1-6 record and sixth place in District 26.

Bellville has only two matches left on its schedule for the 2019 campaign, a trip to the district-leading Hornets and a home contest with Smithville, which will close the Brahmanettes’ regular season on Oct. 29.

Through seven games played, Caldwell dropped only one set and it came at the hands of Bellville who took the opening set, 25-19. Although the Brahmanettes dropped the next three sets, they dropped only one other set in their seven district games, set two against the La Grange Leopards, 25-22, on Sept. 24.

If Bellville remains in second place going into the playoffs, they will likely face the third-place team from District 25 which would be the county rival Sealy Tigers who similarly have two games remaining. If the Brahmanettes can leapfrog, they would draw the fourth-seeded Royal Falcons who had won six sets in district play to open this week.

Sealy and Royal sit behind Fulshear (9-0) and Needville (8-1) in District 25, the latter of whom ended Bellville’s season last year in the regional quarterfinal en route to a state championship appearance.
