For the second year in a row, the Brazos Cougarette volleyball team claimed the District 27-2A championship and faced the Kenedy Lions in the bi-district round.
Earlier in the week, they were searching for their eighth straight Bi-District Championship, and seventh under head coach Denyse Fernandez, this time over Kenedy in Halletsville.
Brazos lost only two games of its regular season district slate to Weimar (3-0) and Shiner (3-1) who finished second and third in the district, respectively. Fourth-place Flatonia secured an upset over the District 28 Champion Yorktown Wildcats earlier this week already.
If the Cougarettes advance to the Area Championship, they would meet with the winner of the Snook-Granger matchup similar to last year as well. After a 3-1 Brazos win over Kenedy in last year’s first round and with Snook taking a 3-0 win over Milano, the Cougarettes and Blue Jays met with the area title on the line and the latter escaped with a 3-1 win en route to a state semifinal appearance.
This time around, Fernandez and the Brazos senior class will look for a little different result to extend a postseason like the one from 2017 which saw them in the Regional Semifinal.
