The Brazos Cougars opened play within District 14-3A-D2 last week and fell to the East Bernard Brahmas 62-6 at home.
With the win and a loss from No. 3 Lexington, East Bernard moved up to No. 4 in “Dave Campbell’s” state rankings heading into its matchup with the Danbury Panthers.
Jared Demny provided the Cougars’ lone score of the game with a 75-yard quarterback run in the second quarter to make it a 48-6 halftime deficit for the Cougars.
The Brahmas got three touchdowns through the air from quarterback Dallas Novicke – one each to Caleb Magness, Andrew Schmidt and Niklas Schatz – and three on the ground from running back Andrew Dirba. Devin Chapman added a rushing touchdown, Brayden Lemon returned a kickoff for a touchdown and Grant Prazak went 8-for-9 on extra-point attempts.
Brazos moves on to a road meeting with the Tidehaven Tigers, who dropped their district-opener to Rice Consolidated 26-14 last week. Tidehaven finished as the district’s runners-up last year to East Bernard and fell in the area round of the playoffs to Poth 21-7.
After the contest with Tidehaven, the Cougars will have an open week ahead of their third district game against Danbury at home on Oct. 16.
