Brazos gets first win

Cougars cash in on takeaways, hold on late

The Brazos Cougars secured their first win of the 2020 season in 18-12 fashion on the road over the Burton Panthers behind seven forced fumbles and two third-quarter scores from Jared Demny.

The win served as Brazos’ highest point total offensively and the fewest points allowed by the defense on the season. The Cougars will hit the road again at the end of this week to face a Randolph Ro-Hawks squad that just evened out to 1-1 after a 34-20 loss to Devine.

Both the Brazos and Burton defenses held the opponent to a scoreless first half but it was Demny’s 9-yard quarterback keeper that opened the scoring in the third quarter. He then found Bryson Bennett through the air for a 32-yard scoring hookup to give the visitors a 12-0 lead.

Burton found the end zone on a 74-yard rush from Carter Callahan and made it a one-possession game with 1:50 left in the third quarter.

However, it was Bryan Maldonado’s strip and score on the seventh Panther fumble that gave the Cougars an 18-6 lead with 5:29 remaining in the game. Although Burton used a screen pass to Cooper Lucherk to score another six points 20 seconds later, Brazos was able to drain the rest of the clock and emerge victoriously.
