The Brazos cross country teams hit the road for its most recent meet, the Yoakum Cross Country Invitational last Saturday.
The varsity squads took fourth and seventh respectively between the girls and boys while a trio of Cougars also competed in the junior varsity race.
On the girls’ side, Brazos was powered by top-10 finishes from the Garcia twins, with Rubi taking sixth and Esmeralda earning ninth to help keep the team score low. Maddie Kneip was not far behind, crossing the finish line in 9:56 to place 18th.
Allie Gonzalez (43) and Gracie Arteaga (45) closed the race nearby with Valentina Ibarra taking 61st, Melissa Gonzalez in 92nd and Ashley Perez registering a 101st-place finish to round out the team total to 110 points, just eight behind third-place Gonzalez.
Out of the 84 runners and 12 teams in the varsity boys' race, Zachary Cortez was the top Cougar finisher, taking 16th in 16:41 in the 2.8-mile course. Not far behind him were Bryan Pedroza in 31st, Brayden Hanzelka in 43rd and Kaden Kneip in 49th. Alfredo Ochoa (55) and Anthony Gonzales (57) put a bow on things for Brazos, pushing their team total to 170 points and earning a seventh-place finish.
Finally, in the junior varsity race, the Cougars received contributions from Joshua Martinez (19), Jacob Molina (29) and Wesley Holub (38) to wrap up their second meet on the year.
The upcoming race will be held in-county, with the Bellville Booster Club Cross Country Invitational next on their schedule set for 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31.
