Brazos basketball earns seven on all-district teams

The District 29-2A all-district basketball teams were released last week and they featured three Cougars and four Cougarettes with 12 more earning academic all-district distinction.

On the boys’ side, a pair earned second-team honors while another earned honorable mention in addition to five academic all-district selections.

Senior Kolton Marek closed his basketball career off with the second-team nod and was joined by junior Jared Demny in landing on that list. Senior August Hale notched the honorable mention in his final season.

Marek and Demny were joined by senior Nick Oliver and sophomores Bryan Maldonado and Hayden Vykukal in registering academic all-district commendations.

For the girls’ team, freshman Haiven Alvarado garnered newcomer-of-the-year honors and three of her teammates bagged honorable mentions with seven more taking home academic all-district distinction.

Junior Presley Reyes and sophomore classmates Meagan Demny and Laura Durrett represented the Cougarettes with honorable mentions and also cracked the list of academic all-district recipients. They were joined by juniors Jessica Buford, Sofia Solis and Savannah Ozuna as well as freshman Jemma Zahradnik.

Both Brazos teams finished last in District 29 although the basketball state championships were canceled due to coronavirus concerns with games remaining.
