Bras for a Cause raises $5,571

A capacity crowd of about 80 gathered at Saddleback Saloon on Saturday, Oct. 24, to watch local businessmen shake and shimmy as they modeled customized bras at the annual Bras for a Cause event.

Founded six years ago by Karen Lopez (a former publisher of The Sealy News) and Tom Mendenhall of Saddleback Saloon, this year’s event raised $5,571 to benefit the Memorial Hermann Breast Cancer Center in Katy. Lopez, now of Across the Board Media, served as the emcee.

Auctioneer Allen Kaminski auctioned off 27 bras, as the 11 models paraded through the crowd, dancing to the theme music selected by each participant. Bras were donated by local businesses including Saddleback Saloon, Twisted Willow, Cast Iron Winery, Studio Blend Gallery & Coffee Shop, and Austin County Rotary.

Models included:

  • Timothy “Big T” Fitzgerald – Big T Auto Detailing
  • Russ Rainwater – Austin County State Bank
  • Clayton Schavrda – Starbrite Electric and Generators
  • Dennis Clark – Owner Frontier Sales and Marketing Group
  • Eric Crosby – Crosby Towing
  • Tim McCarthy – McCarthy Drafting
  • Skylar McCarthy – McCarthy Drafting
  • Chris Wisdom – After 11 Band
  • Chris Ryan – Chris Ryan Band
  • Perry Strauss – Public Utilities Superintendent

The top seller was worn by Timothy “Big T” Fitzgerald, which was sold for $1,800.00 to Christy Fitzgerald.

“Even with the 2020 COVID-19 complications, the Austin County community pulled together for another successful Bras for a Cause,” said Lopez. “We want to thank everyone who supported us once again in the fight against breast cancer.”

“I have family members that have succumbed to cancer as well as friends,” Mendenhall said. “Cancer kills a heck of lot more people each year than COVID does. In 2018, an estimated 9.5 million people died of cancer worldwide. About 600,000 cancer deaths happen in the U.S. each year. This is the motivation.”
