Brahmas gearing up for postseason

With Bellville handing La Grange its first loss of district play last week and Giddings similarly falling to Smithville, there no longer is an undefeated team in District 12-4A-2 going into the final week of the regular season.

The Brahmas, Leopards and Buffaloes all sit atop their district with 3-1 records although Bellville draws the last-place Royal Falcons for its season finale (Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Bellville) while La Grange and Giddings square off this week to determine the middle seedings.

In fourth place sits the Tigers of Smithville with a 2-2 record and they will do battle with the fifth-place Caldwell Hornets, who own a 1-3 record within District 12, to close their regular seasons.

Before then, the Brahmas took down one of the last undefeated teams in the state with a 52-27 shellacking of the Leopards to reverse a trend they had built up in their first three district wins.

Entering play last week, La Grange had outscored opponents 31.3-24 on average over its eight games to that point but limited its first three district opponents to an average of 13.3 points per game. Bellville bested that mark three times over by scoring 14 points in the second, third and fourth quarters following a 10-point first quarter.

Although the Leopards similarly scored in every quarter, their total never entered the double digits and the Brahma defense continued its stingy nature and now owns the third-best point allowance in the district with an average of 21 points against per game.

Following the 52-point outburst, the Bellville point total in district play ticked up to 118 which is good enough for a first-place tie with Smithville and puts it above the previous undefeated La Grange (108) and Giddings (105) offenses heading into the final game of the year.
