Bellville football remains undefeated

Bellville junior Bobby Briggs supplied a pair of kickoff returns for touchdowns in the third quarter to help the Brahmas top the visiting Stafford Spartans 50-29 and remain undefeated.

The Week Three matchup was the first home game in Bellville and the family of senior Zach Hood, who lost his life in a car accident before the season, was honored pregame by joining the captains at midfield for the coin toss with Hood’s #3 jersey.

It was in between Briggs’ scores that Stafford scored twice to tie the game at 29 apiece. Jordan Barrett provided an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown then Christian Fregia supplied a rushing touchdown and with a two-point conversion, it was a tie game with 10:22 left in the third.

Briggs’ second score was also from 80 yards out and Richard Reese added a short-yardage rushing touchdown before the third quarter was over. The Brahmas added to their lead in the fourth with an 8-yard rush from Kyle Peschel where Briggs was on the receiving end of the two-point conversion that pushed the hosts’ lead to 50-29.

With the win, the Brahmas moved up two positions in the state rankings for Class 4A-D2 created by “Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.” Bellville jumped from No. 9 to No. 7 with a showdown with the Rockdale Tigers, who dropped from No. 6 to No. 8 in the Class 3A-D1 rankings after losing to Lexington, coming up this week.

After this week’s trip to Rockdale, the Brahmas will have just one more non-district game before their district-opening contest on Oct. 9 against the Wharton Tigers.
