Bellville climbs to No. 6

Brahmas stay unbeaten, face West Columbia next

After taking down the eighth-ranked team in Class 3A Division 1 by a 42-14 score, the Bellville Brahmas climbed one spot in “Dave Campbell’s” rankings to No. 6 in the state for Class 4A’s Division 2 with a clean 4-0 record.

Bellville sits behind only Carthage (1-0), Texarkana Pleasant Grove (3-1), West Orange-Stark (1-0), Gilmer (4-0) and Jasper (3-0).

This week, the Brahmas will play host to a 3-1 West Columbia team that will enter the Pasture of Pain on a three-game win streak where they’ve outscored opponents 113-48. It will also be the non-district finale for Bellville, with a showdown with the Wharton Tigers set for Oct. 9 for its first game within District 12-4A-2.

The Brahmas remained undefeated behind two-touchdown performances from Robert Briggs and Richard Reese and a scoreless first half defensively.

Quarterback Jake Lischka completed 5 of 7 passing attempts for 111 yards with three throws going for touchdowns, two to Briggs and a 5-yard connection with Brandt Okonski. Reese collected both of his scores on the ground as part of a 153-yard outing with a long run of 40 yards. Kyle Peschel collected 90 yards rushing and added a score while Benito Florencio hit all six of his point-after tries.

Briggs finished the night with 181 all-purpose yards spread over 10 carries for 56 yards, four receptions for 106 yards and a 19-yard punt return.
