Austin County Fair to host calf scramble

The Austin County Fair will host the 2018 Calf Scramble again this year.

There are two components to the Calf Scramble program: sponsors and scramblers. One cannot work without the other. Sponsors are essential to continuing the program, which gives young students the chance to learn about agriculture and responsibility. Sponsors are needed for calves and for the awards program.

This program is open to any boy or girl who has reached his/her 12th birthday by or on Sept. 1, 2018, and has not exceeded his/her junior year in high school. The boy/girl must reside in Austin County or be enrolled in a public school, private school or home school in Austin County and also be enrolled in a 4-H Club or FFA Chapter in Austin County. Participants may apply as many times as desired and may receive up to two certificates. Application for participation must be submitted to the Austin County Fair Office, P. O. Box 141, Bellville, Texas 77418 or the Austin County Extension Office, 1 E Main Street, Bellville, Texas 77418. All applications for participation are due on or before Sept. 17, 2018.

Participants completing an application will receive a letter of acceptance and invitation to participate in the scramble at the ACF Rodeo Arena on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018. Participants who catch will be awarded a calf scramble certificate in the amount of $1000 to be used to purchase a commercial or registered heifer to be raised during the 2018-2019 year returning to show at the 2019 Austin County Fair. There are several contests within the program such as monthly sponsor reports, expense reports, photography, ending essay, stall boards, scrapbook and fighting heart essay. All of these contests result in cash and prizes for top four placings. There is an additional $200 for completing all requirements of the scramble program. In addition there is an overall award for top three exhibitors.
