During February, the Extension Education Association of Austin County hosted its annual 2024 Cultural Arts Contest. The event was coordinated by the Cultural Arts Committee, which was co-chaired by Barney Zimmerman of Bleiblerville EEA and Gaye Farr of West End EEA. Committee members include — Malinda Schramm, Claudia Cieslewicz and Joan Buenger.

The Sealy Garden Club named Tony’s Family Restaurant as its Business Yard of the Month. The landscaping was donated by Dr. Paul Beckwith with the Sealy Eye Center.

In February, the Extension Education Association of Austin County sponsored a soup, sandwich and dessert meal in honor of the Austin County Commissioners Court and many of its community partners.

On Feb. 13, Austin County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Drake was presented a Letter of Commendation for outstanding performance Jan. 30, responding to cattle being out and at times in the roadway. Drake demonstrated concern for public safety and damage to personal property, which exemplifies commitment to the well-being of the citizens of Austin County.

COLUMBUS — Hound Song Brewing Co, located in downtown Columbus, was awarded Gold and Silver medals at the 2024 Texas Craft Brewers Cup presented by the Texas Craft Brewers Guild.

The Brazos FFA Dairy Cattle teams competed at the San Antonio Livestock Show last week. With over 90 teams and 300 individuals, the team did very well. Brazos finished in 7th place with the team ofBrayden Krahn, Gauge McCain, Gunner Grigar, and Colton Richardson. Brazos also had a team finish in 13th place team in their first contest ever. The team consisted of Joe Wilson, Robert Hartfield, Madison Pailes and Chase Kuhn.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On the third anniversary of Winter Storm Uri, an Austin- based congressman says he is pushing for a bill to secure Texas’ power grid, save money and prevent future deadly blackouts.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced during a press conference in Eagle Pass that Texas is building a Forward Operating Base in the Del Rio sector to house Texas National Guard soldiers who are responding to President Joe Biden’s border crisis.
