Editor’s note: This is the second of a two-part series on a look back at the bigger stories of 2023 as reported by The Sealy News. The second half of 2023 started with the Sealy community welcoming Clint Finley to the area as the new athletic director/head football coach for the high school. An Austin County grand jury found no criminal intent in the death of an inmate in the Austin County Jail and the state legislature’s failure to pass a school funding bill causes local districts to consider budget cuts.

A train derailment occurred Saturday, Jan. 6 in Sealy at the Front St/Fourth St. crossings for Steinhauser’s. According to early reports, the train was carrying crushed rock when multiple cars derailed or completely turned over on the tracks. The cause of the derailment is still under investigation. Railroad crews are also investigating the incident as well.
