Blinn history instructor’s new book explores how the U.S. Civil War impacted Cherokees

Blinn College District history instructor Dr. W Dale Weeks brings the figures from his classroom to life in his new book, “Cherokee Civil Warrior: Chief John Ross and the Struggle for Tribal Sovereignty.” Published by the University of Oklahoma Press, the book delves into the impact of the U.S. Civil War on Native Americans and specifically the Cherokee Nation.

LCRA to build new power plant to help Texas grid

The Lower Colorado River Authority on Tuesday announced it will build a new peaker power plant in Central Texas to provide an additional 190 megawatts of dispatchable power to the Texas power grid.
 
The plant is expected to be operational in 2025. A peaker plant is one that typically is used for brief periods during times when the demand for power approaches or surpasses the amount of power available.

Town Hall meeting to address unequal justice

Seeking Justice Organization is hosting a town hall meeting to address the unequal justice toward certain people.

“The point of the meeting is to address that everyone deserves quality justice for all in the Austin County justice system,” said Rev. J.R. Johnson.

The meeting is set for Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at the Sens Activity Center in Bellville.

Library revamps services to meet needs of area

If you haven’t been to the Gordon Memorial Library recently, it’s time to pay it another visit.

Thanks to a proactive board of directors, the Gordon Memorial Library has revamped its services to better serve the needs of this community.

Chairman of the Gordon Memorial Library Board Terry Arnold said, “we have revamped every single thing at the library.”

Arnold moved to the Sealy area in 2020 and being a new resident started to utilize the library
