Black named all-conference

Wharton County Junior College athletes earned a host of All-Conference and All-Region honors after the spring seasons came to a conclusion. Bellville High School alumnus Kevin Black was one of five second-team all-conference selections and one of seven who earned Region XIV All-Academic Team honors for the baseball team.

Twenty-six on academic all-state lists

Bellville High School had 26 seniors honored with academic allstate distinction from the Texas High School Coaches Association and Texas Army National Guard when the lists were announced May 6. To be honored, student-athletes, trainers and managers had to be a senior in good standing with the team, of good moral character and had maintained an overall grade point average of 92 or above in all classes from grades 9-11 and courses completed in grade 12.

Reese commits to Baylor

Bellville junior running back Richard Reese recently announced his commitment to play football for the Baylor Bears after his high school career. Reese announced he received an offer from the Big 12 school last Monday, May 10, then announced his commitment to Baylor May 13 in a written statement.

The final crop of track and field athletes was whittled down to the tops in Texas following regional championship action across the lone star state last week. Locally, Sealy’s Breanna Brandes (pole vault) and Bellville’s Kirby Marik (high jump) earned second-place finishes at the Region III Championship at Challenger Columbia Stadium in League City last Friday and Saturday.

Townsend, Marek compete at state

Bellville and Brazos both had a lone representative at the Division 2 Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Championship at the Taylor County Expo in Abilene March 15. Alex Marek represented the Brahmas in the 198-pound weight class and finished fourth overall while Joey Townsend competed in the 165-pound weight class for the Cougars and earned 12th overall.
