Soap star to appear at local Relay for Life

Anthony Herrera, the New York actor famous for his portrayal of James Stenbeck on the long-running television soap opera "As the World Turns," will attend Austin County Relay for Life at Sealy Tiger Stadium on April 23.

Herrera, who is a cancer survivor of mantle cell lymphoma, will speak during the opening ceremony at 6 p.m. He will then leave the field and take to the track where he will lead fellow survivors in officially kicking off Relay with the traditional Survivors' Lap. Afterward, he plans to autograph his book, The Cancer War, My Story, and pose for photos.

Although Herrera is hailed as being "the ultimate villain" as Stenbeck, the actor has earned other credits as well, playing the title role of the television film Mandrake the Magician and a feature role in Helter Skelter. He also has appeared in episodes of Mancuso FBI, The Incredible Hulk and The Rockford Files. In addition, he has played roles in the daytime dramas The Young and the Restless and Loving.

However, cancer does not pick and choose its victims, and in January 1997, Herrera was told, "You are going to die."

The actor was treated at Sloan-Kettering with chemotherapy, radiation and an autogolous bone marrow transplant. In the fall of 1998, he relapsed.

In 1999, he was admitted to M. D. Anderson Cancer Center where he received stem cell transplantation that made medical history.

"I now have hope for a cancer free life," says Herrera.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a malignancy composed of cells that have normal counterparts found in the mantle zone of the lymph node. All four of the rare recognizable forms of MCL carry poor prognoses.

Accomplishing the feat of being cancer-free energized Herrera so greatly that he recently has developed www.poetrytheatre.org where actors perform their favorite poems. Browsers will delight in Herrera's renditions along with other notables such as Hume Cronyn, Charles Durning and Willie Nelson.

Survival is possible, and because Herrera truly believes that, he was driven to write his story so that others may experience the hope he felt as he fought his personal battle against cancer. The Cancer War will be for sale at Relay for a cost of $25. All proceeds of the sale of the book will go to the American Cancer Society.

"We are very excited about having a well known actor attend Relay," say Relay Co-Chairpersons, Pat Vornkahl and Mary Schomburg. "He is truly a caring person and has been generous to us."

If you are a cancer survivor and wish to walk with Anthony Herrera, you may register by phoning 885-4678 or 865-5448 at anytime, or 865-9573 after 5 p.m.
